For those that are new to couponing at Smith's, it can be confusing, so I wanted to make a quick post to help you with understanding how the sales at Smith's work, what the Catalina's are and what the meaning is of all those acronyms.
Smith's has several different kinds of promotions, Mega Event Sales, 10 for 10 sales and Catalina's they can, and in fact are meant to confuse you. Here's a little guide that hopefully will help you make sense of it all.
#1 - Regular sale items. Regular sale items are usually marked with a tag that states "sale price" (usually orange). Keep in mind, JUST BECAUSE THE TAG IS ORANGE, THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S THE BEST PRICE! It's always a good idea to make a mental note of what the average prices are of the items you purchase regularly. If you don't think you'll remember, keep a little notebook.
2- 10/$10 sales - $1.00 each. These can vary in dollar value. You might find 2/$5 - $2.50 each or 4/$3 - $1.67 each, it doesn't matter, they are all the same. What you need to know here, is that a minimum purchase is not required unless indicated on the tag (usually soda is the exception) While I'm sure Smith's hopes you'll buy 10, you can just purchase 1 and pay $1. When these items are listed in the match-ups, they are posted with the price for ONE item.
Here's how a post might read for a regular sale item
Vlasic Pickles $1.99
Use the $1/2 Vlasic Pickles in the SS-5/10
Use the $1/1 Vlasic Bold & Spicy Stackers printable
Pay as low as $0.99 *HOT*
#2- Mega Event Sales: These might be advertised as Mega Event, Cartbuster Event, Crazy4Smith's event , you get the drift, they can be tricky and confusing but, they are our favorite sales. You can mix and match available coupons with the sale items and really come out ahead.
Some things to keep in mind:
*a- These are Mix and Match. You don't have buy just that specific product.
*b- You must mix and match your purchase in the required quantities. In the picture above, for example, you will need to purchase participating products in quantities of 5 to get the $1.79 price on that item. Sometimes, it's 8 or 10. I like to keep track by putting the items in a certain area of my cart, then moving them out of the area when the required quantity is met or if you have a shopping list, just make a tic mark every time you add a participating item to your cart, what ever works for you.
**NOTE: It's important to keep track. If the required quantity is 5, and you purchase 6 of the "Event" items, you WILL NOT get the discount on the 6th item. In this case you would need to purchase in multiples of 5 (5, 10, 15 etc) to get you the added savings.
Here's how a post might read for a Mega Event item:
Special K Cereal $1.99
Mega Event Buy 3 Save $3 item
Use the $1/3 Special K Cereal printable coupon
Pay $1.66 each
Now, lets throw Catalina's into the mix. First off, to clarify, for our purposes, a Catalina is a Smith's store coupon that can be used on anything in the store. Catlaina offers print when a certain quantity of items are purchased. For example, you might get a $1 back when you purchase two or more packages of Hot Dogs.
Sometimes a the machine will print a coupon that's for money off a specific item, those are not tracked or mentioned in our match-up posts. But, watch for them. You will receive MANY that have been large enough in value to get your free products. And, sometimes there are more that one Catalina offers on a specific product.
#3 - Catalina's: When we announce a Catalina deal it will look like something like this:
Bandaid Products $2.19
.50/1 Bandaid products printable coupon
~Extra Catalina Savings Promo:
Buy 3 Bandaid or Neosporin products = $2.00 Catalina
Buy (3) Bandaid 30 ct clear strips products $2.19 = $6.57
Use (3) $0.50/1 Bandaid printable coupon
Pay $5.07 after coupons AND receive a $2.00 Smith's Coupon at checkout
Final price is $3.07 - just $1.02 each
Catalina's can OFTEN get you dramatic savings when they pair up with a sale and it's not uncommon to see one or two during a "Mega Event."
#4 - Acronyms: SS = Smart Source (it's found in Sunday's Newspaper), PG = Proctor Gamble (also found in Sunday's newspaper), RP = Redplum (comes in the mail for most in Utah). The date is located in small print on the spine of the circular.
Hopefully that will help you get started. PLEASE, feel free to leave questions and comments here or on our Facebook wall.
