I am so excited to share with you this money-saving idea. If you like to bake, you know that buying those little bottles of colored sugar can get expensive and it can be hard to find a wide variety of colors. DIY Sanding Sugar is easy to make with Kroger granulated sugar and Kroger food coloring. That’s all you need!
How to make your own Colored Sugar
Store bought sanding sugar runs between .44 to .99 cents per ounce. By making your own with Kroger products it is closer to .04 to .07 cents per ounce and you can make any color, in any shade you want.
DIY Sanding Sugar Instructions:
Pour 1/2 cup sugar into a zipper food storage bag.
Put food coloring into the sugar. I use between 6 drops and 1 teaspoon of food coloring, depending on how dark I want the color. You may want to experiment with less to start, you can always add more.
Zip the bag closed and shake and squish the sugar around until the food coloring is completely mixed into the sugar.
Pour the sugar onto a baking sheet covered with parchment paper or foil.
Spread out the sugar so that it is one a nice thin layer.
Bake at 170 degrees for 10 minutes.
Remove sugar from oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.
Pour sugar back into a food storage bag and shake and squish the sugar until the sugar crystals are all broken up and no clumps remain.
Granulated sugar has smaller granules than store bought colored sugar. If you are putting the sugar on cookies before baking, you will want a more coarse sugar so that it doesn’t melt in the oven while the cookies bake.
If you don’t want to cook the sugar to remove the moisture from the food coloring, you can leave the sheet pan out overnight to allow the sugar to dry.
If you add too much food coloring and the color is darker than you wanted, you can add more sugar to the zipper baggie to lighten the color.
The color of the sugar is a little darker when wet from the food coloring and will lighten a little after it has dried in the oven.
I love the look of the fine colored sugar and how it sparkles on these sugar cookies. It would be so fun to make colored sanding sugar to match a birthday party, team colors or even different shades of the same color (ooh, maybe different shades of green for St. Paddy’s Day)!
Smith’s has a STELLAR sale price happening this week on their Boneless Pork Sirloin Roasts. They will cost you a mere $0.99/lb as apposed to the regular $4.00/lb price! The roasts are sold whole in a bag. The cost is around $10 for the entire roast. When you cut the package open the roast is portioned into 4 sections. You are going to want to stock your freezers with a couple of these roasts, and I wanted to share a family favorite recipe that utilizes these roasts.
My family LOVES tacos! Beef, chicken, pork. They’re all delicious. I like to use the pork roast to make pork carnitas. My go to recipe is friendly for an Instant Pot. If you don’t have an instant pot you seriously need to get one! This kitchen is a mom’s best friend! It’s a pressure cooker and literally cooks your food in no time flat. I can take frozen meat and make a delicious dinner ready to be served in 1 hour – that’s crazy!
For the Pork Carnitas your roast will be fork tender in 2 hours, which takes 8 hours in a regular crock pot. The pork carnitas can be served with just about anything. Serve them like regular tacos with all the toppings, or simply spoon them over rice. Whatever works for you.
For leftovers, I like to throw my meat back into my Instant Pot with a bottle of BBQ sauce. Cook it on manual for 15 minutes and voila you have pulled BBQ pork to throw on a bun!
UPDATE: This giveaway has ended. The winners will be announced later today (1/2)

I created this Apple Crisp Chex Mix on vacation last summer in St. George. We were sharing a beautiful house with a great kitchen with my parents. My Mom, has Celiac’s disease and doesn’t eat any gluten. Enter, Gluten Free Apple Crisp Chex Mix!
The best part is that Chex is on sale at Smith’s right now for $1.99 and SavingStar is offering a $1.00 rebate on (2) boxes. After making your purchase, simply submit a picture of your receipt through their handy app. and you’ll get $1.00 back. You’ll also find a $1/2 Smith’s Digital coupon on the app. SWEET!
We munched and munched on it while we played board games and everyone enjoyed it so much, the next day we went to the store and bought more ingredients so we could make it again! Check out the recipe and the short video to see how easy it is to make.
My mother-in-law is a great cook. Several of our favorite family recipes have come from her. I have no idea where this Make Ahead Breakfast Casserole recipe came from, all I know is that she has been making it as long as I have been part of the family!
I LOVE that I can make it ahead of time, refrigerate it and then just pull it out and cook it 45-60 minutes before breakfast. Perfect for company, holidays or just busy school mornings.
This is the perfect week to try it out because Smith’s is having their case lot sale and the casserole ingredients are a great price. You can get 5 dozen medium Oakdale eggs for just $3.99! Also, 5 lbs of shredded Tillamook cheese is only 12.99, that’s just $2.60 a pound and Kroger evaporated milk is just $1.00 each when you buy a case of 24.
[yumprint-recipe id=’3′]Hope you enjoy this easy, yummy recipe. Don’t worry about having leftovers, they heat up nicely in the microwave. Perfect for a quick, hot breakfast.
There have been lots and lots of new readers to the site the last few days. Welcome aboard, we are glad you are here. Here’s a quick 4 minute video on how to create your own customized shopping list using the my list feature. Each time you visit the website you can add more to your list until you’re ready to shop.
Pantry Salsa is a family favorite at my house. It’s great on tortilla chips, tacos, burritos, fajitas, pork carnitas and nachos. My kids love it so much, we rarely buy jarred salsa any more. Plus, it’s a great way to use some of the Kroger tomatoes I bought last week at the case lot sale!
The reason I call it Pantry Salsa, is because almost all of the ingredients are staples that I keep in my fridge and pantry. This means we can whip up a batch of homemade salsa, any time of the year!
This does make a very large batch of salsa, which makes it great for parties and potlucks. But you can easily cut this recipe in half. (Tip: When I cut it in half, I freeze the other half of the green chilies and El Pato sauce for the next time I make a half batch. That way I save money and they don’t go to waste.)
